Failure Analysis

One of the most overlooked areas of Repair Technology & Electric Motor Repair is the Analysis of the cause of the failure.

Failures are seldom random and are preceded by some telltale indications. Such things as oil analysis on reciprocating systems such as is done on aircraft engines to determine if there is excessive wear, and indication of imminent failure Vibration analysis in electric motors, generators, turbines and centrifugal compressors and pumps can almost always avoid catastrophic failure.

When you are repairing equipment look for signs such as overheating. This can be seen in color changes of the metal, blackened oil which indicates the temperature is over the anticipated operating range. The causes can be caused by insufficient lubrication, a lubrication failure, overtermperature operating environment. If the bearing is a sleeve and hammered generally this will indicate a lubrication failure which preceded a bearing wear which allowed the rotating part to vibrate excessively.

Determining and eliminating the causes of the failure being repaired are essential before commencing the repair.
